What to Wear to a Pakistani Wedding: A Men's Guide

Wedding season means three or four functions in a week, each with a different dress code — and showing up in the same outfit reads as badly as overdressing. Here is the reliable formula for each event.

Mehndi: colour belongs here

The mehndi is the one function where bright colour is expected. Yellow, orange, green, magenta — a vibrant kurta with white shalwar, sleeves rolled, khussay on. Fabrics can be lighter and the fit more relaxed; you will be dancing.

Baraat: the formal peak

This is the event to invest in. A premium boski or karandi kurta shalwar in a rich tone — ivory, deep maroon, royal blue — with a fitted waistcoat or a proper sherwani if you're close family. Formal khussay, a watch, and restrained grooming. If there is one function to buy new fabric for, it is this one.

Walima: refined and quieter

The walima calls for elegance without flash. Softer tones — cream, dove grey, powder blue, muted gold — in a fabric with a subtle sheen. A well-cut kurta shalwar with minimal detail often looks better here than heavy embroidery.

If you're the groom's or bride's brother

You will be in every photograph. Coordinate — don't match — with the family palette, book your tailor at least three weeks before the wedding, and do a full fitting a week early so alterations are possible. A backup pressed outfit is not paranoia; it is experience.

The mistakes that ruin wedding outfits

• Late tailoring: wedding season books tailors out weeks ahead. Buy fabric early.
• Unworn shoes: new khussay pinch. Break them in at home first.
• Overmatching: waistcoat, kurta and shoes in the exact same shade look flat. Vary the tones.
• Ignoring the weather: outdoor winter baraats are cold — a wool-blend fabric or a shawl saves the night.
