Kurta Size & Fit Guide: How to Get the Perfect Fit

Not sure how much fabric you need, or how a kurta should sit on the shoulders? This guide covers measurements, fits and tailoring tips for the perfect kurta.

How a kurta should fit

A well-fitted kurta sits cleanly on the shoulders — the shoulder seam should end exactly where your shoulder does. The chest should have enough room to move without billowing, and the length typically falls just above or at the knee for a classic silhouette.

Taking your measurements

  • Chest: measure around the fullest part of your chest, keeping the tape level.
  • Shoulder: measure across the back, from one shoulder edge to the other.
  • Length: from the highest point of the shoulder down to where you want the hem.
  • Sleeve: from the shoulder edge to the wrist bone.

How much unstitched fabric do you need?

For a standard men's kurta shalwar, 4.5 to 5 metres of fabric is the safe range. Taller men (over 6 feet) or those preferring a longer kurta should take the full 5 metres. A kurta pajama needs slightly less — around 4 to 4.25 metres.

Tips for your tailor

Always wash and press wash & wear fabric before stitching, ask for a slightly tapered sleeve for a modern look, and request side pockets — you will thank yourself later.
